Moon Pie is a social issues book written by Simon Mason. Moon Pie takes place in a small town in England. Where the main character (Martha) is going through a lot of changes in her life. Her mother has died and her father is becoming an alcoholic. Martha and her little brother Tug are struggling to keep up with her dad’s new schedule of getting drunk everyday. During the book Martha starts to step up and take on the role of the woman in the house. She cooks, cleans and even takes care of her little brother Tug. As the book progresses, Martha gets more and more stressed about her father and Tug.
At the beginning of the book, Martha’s dad fell off the roof. From what I can infer, he was drunk when he fell off the roof. After her dad goes to the doctor he starts acting very strangely. He forgets to feed Martha and Tug and doesn’t clean up the house. Martha decides to step up and take care of Tug and her dad. After a disastrous lunch date, Martha consults her friend Laura, who thinks that Martha’s dad is getting drunk. After further research, Martha came to the conclusion that her father was getting drunk. After consulting her dad about the matter, Martha decided to get rid of the bottles and to make sure that her dad wasn't drinking again. After that everything was getting better and Martha believed her dad wasn’t drinking anymore.
In this story there are many unpredicted twists. Later on in the story, Martha comes home and sees her dad unconscious on the floor. She immediately calls Laura (who seems to be an expert on the subject), who tells carry him to his bed. After a visit gone wrong, Martha’s grandparents contact social services and convince them to take Martha and Tug away from their dad. Their dad isn’t allowed to see them because his visitation rights were taken away from him. I won’t tell you about the ending because I don’t want to spoil it.
In conclusion I think that this book is very interesting and funny. I would recommend this to a reader who likes sad books with happy endings. That is exactly what this book is. I would rate this book 5 stars out of 5 stars. Thank you for reading my book report about the book Moon Pie.
